The word of the patriarch, Joseph, when meeting his family for the first time in many years, “I am your brother Joseph,” echoes the memoir of Cardinal Bernadin. The Cardinal reflects on the accusation made against him of sexual abuse while at the same time dealing with a cancer diagnosis. He finds the providence of God in these seemingly negative events that deepen his spiritual life. In doing so he perceives, as Patriarch Joseph did, the ability of God to transform something negative into something positive. Our lives are filled with negative events as well and they can be very discouraging. The challenge face is to act as our ancestors in the faith did and see how God transforms our personal Good Fridays into something glorious.
