Jacob and all his descendants migrated to Egypt. His sons and his grandsons, his daughters and his granddaughters—all his descendants. God had instructed Abram (soon to be Abraham) to go to the land of the promise. There God would raise up descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky or sand on the sea. Abraham’s grandson, Jacob, abandoned the Land of the Promise and went to Egypt. According to Genesis he had a vision on the way telling him it was okay, that his descendants would return. As the Bible tells it, that return occurred 430 years later! Somehow the Chosen People kept the memory of the promised land alive for all those centuries. While that seems like a really long time (and it is!) recently in Chicago we had protests in front of the Christopher Columbus statue because of events 500+ years earlier. People have long memories.
