Jesus lifts his voice in prayer in St. Matthew’s gospel in a way that celebrates the relationship of the Father and the Son. During the prayer he says, “You have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike.” The wise and the learned know that you have to look out for yourself — buy life insurance, pay your health care premiums, put a security system around your house. The children know that, because their parents love them, they will be taken care of, their needs will be met, they will be safe. In the spiritual life we can be like children and trust that God will bless us. We don’t need to do anything to receive God’s love.
