The prophet Isaiah was not one of the eating locusts and wearing camel’s hair kind of prophet but an insider, an advisor to the king. That makes his denunciation of the sins of Israel all the more startling. He begins by calling them Sodom and Gomorrah, the epitome of evil in the Book of Genesis. But what he accuses them of is not sexual sins or even commandment breaking but injustice. Cease doing evil; learn to do good. Make justice your aim: redress the wronged, hear the orphan’s plea, defend the widow. Modern politicians love to wrap themselves in a mantle of morality — by which they mean behavior that they agree with. Isaiah dares us to look beyond the traditional trappings of religious practice and instead change how we treat those who are hurting or marginalized. That is the devotion God is seeking.
