Someone once observed that most people treat God as a hobby — a occupation that you turn to when you are not doing something important. That the spiritual life requires effort and makes demands upon us is shunted to the background. Jesus challenges that view when he says to be his disciples we must take on his “yoke.” Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, For my yoke is easy, and my burden light. A yoke is heavy, implies labor, carries a weight. But Jesus says his yoke, his burden is easy and light. The usual yoke we carry are our own efforts to make ourselves happy. The yoke of Jesus is to trust in the plan of God wherever it leads — easy, yes?.
