If you follow Catholic news you might have heard that the US bishops are considering writing a letter to the faithful on the Holy Eucharist. This is actually a good idea — after we have not be able to receive the sacrament for so many months we need to recover the centrality that the Eucharist plays in Catholic spirituality. There has been some controversy, however, since some of the bishops want to exclude certain politicians from receiving. The controversy over worthiness goes back to Jesus’ time. When his disciples were accused of violating the law he said: If you knew what this meant, I desire mercy, not sacrifice, you would not have condemned these innocent men. Similarly, Pope Francis urges Catholics to be inclusive not exclusive.
