Everyone probably has a sermon or two they remember — but usually not for any profound insight. I remember Fr. Gilbert preaching once: “You can love, love, love until the cows come home but you’ve still got to keep the commandments.” Jesus as a good Jewish boy was very respectful of the commandments (“I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.”) That explains his response to the challenge “Your disciples are doing what is unlawful to do on the sabbath.” Jesus did not look on commandments as a list of things in order to get right with God. Rather, commandments for him were the ideals or goals we must continue to strive for … and yes, that does include love, love, love of God and neighbor.
