One of the moving moments in the Seder meal, the sacred meal held by each Jewish family at Passover, comes in telling the story of the Exodus. “When WE were slaves in Egypt, God led US to freedom.” The story told in a personal way fulfills the Biblical command: on this same night all the children of Israel must keep a vigil for the LORD throughout their generations. One’s history shapes one’s identity. There seems to be a fear from some quarters to retell honestly the history of the United States — the good, the bad and the ugly. The Bible demonstrates that if we don’t tell the story honestly we will not repent and then become the people God made us to be.
