My scripture professor called this passage from Matthew 11 “a Johannine lightning bolt in a Matthean sky.” He was saying that the language of this passage of “Father and Son” would sound right at home in the Fourth Gospel but you find it in the First… which means that Jesus really did talk in that way! What Jesus says is “although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike.” Jesus used children as an example often. We should welcome a child, we should become like a child and in today’s passage we should learn from a child since they know something revealed by God. What do the children know? They know to be amazed staring at a starry night. They know to enjoy the beauty of a flower. They know that playing with a box is sometimes more fun than what is in the box. They know that hugs always help. What children know is that everything, even the simplest, reveals something of God.
