There are certain preachers who can make it sound as if following Jesus will mean you will succeed in life, your income will rise and you will have no health issues. That is, of course, exactly NOT what Jesus promised. In fact, he told us that following him would include picking up our cross just as he did. That helps us understand the saying of Jesus: Take my yoke upon you and learn from me … For my yoke is easy, and my burden light. Jesus is not saying we won’t have a yoke, burdens, to carry in life. He is asking us to make a switch, to switch our burdens for his. We are burdened with our plans, our expectations, our desires. We get frustrated and disappointed when they don’t come to fruition. Jesus tells us that taking on his burden — that is, trusting in the plan of God wherever it leads us — is easy and light in comparison. Saying “not my will but thine be done” frees us.
