We read in the Book of Exodus the story of the first Passover supper. Since that day up the present the sacred meal is celebrated. “This day shall be a memorial feast for you, which all your generations shall celebrate.” It was, of course, at a Passover meal (called the Seder Supper) that Jesus instituted the Eucharist. The symbolism of the feast is important to both Jewish and Christian traditions. One thing to notice according to the Biblical story: you are to eat it: with your loins girt, sandals on your feet and your staff in hand, you shall eat like those who are in flight. For the Hebrew children this was literally true. They were in flight from Pharaoh that would lead them to crossing the Red Sea. But for us there is a spiritual significance to that admonition as well. We are also not in our true homeland. We are on the way to the promise of God. We too are a people that are looking to find true freedom as children of God.
