If you think about it Moses was, like a modern person, spiritual but not religious. There was no temple to worship at, there were no divine laws to obey, there was no priestly caste to mediate between God and the world while the Hebrew children were in Egypt. All they had was a memory of God being with their ancestors. So, again like a modern person, Moses was looking for some experience, some connection with the spiritual dimension of his existence. The burning bush qualified! God said, “Come no nearer! Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground. Out of seeking for the spiritual Moses eventually led his people into a structured religion that enabled them to find God not just in that “holy ground” but in their everyday lives. What Moses learned was that every piece of ground wherever you are is holy ground because it all points toward God.
