In the scene at the burning bush when Moses asked God’s name the Lord replied: I am who am. This, in its original form in Hebrew (YHWH), became literarally and liturgically the name applied to God and was only uttered aloud by the High Priest. However, a closer look at the text suggests that God had a different self-identification. Moses was told to inform the people: “The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is my name forever; this my title for all generations.” God could only to be named in relationship, as the one who was connected to the Chosen People. The Christian naming of God as Trinity describes God as relationship itself. As we strive to be people of God we must make every effort to place our relationships as the source of our self-definition as well.
