The Prophet Micah apparently lived in Jerusalem whence he saw the northern kingdom of Israel fall to the Assyrians. The threat to Jerusalem was palpable. This was happening, according to the prophet, because the people were living unjustly, contrary to the will of God. Woe to those who plan iniquity; They covet fields, and seize them; They cheat an owner of his house, a man of his inheritance. Therefore thus says the LORD: Behold, I am planning against this race an evil. The Prophet is saying, actions have consequences. If society is structured so that injustice florishes you should not be surprised that such a society loses the protection of God. In today’s world the deep societal divisions we are seeing are a result of injustices built into our system. Can God be on our side if racism is rampant, if lack of economic opportunity is acceptable, if the planet is not being cared for, if children are not safe?
