If you find yourself criticized realize you are in good company — they even criticized Jesus who was the Son of God! We should not let any criticism convince us that we are beloved children of God. What about when we are the criticizers? We all make critical judgments. One helpful guideline is given by St. Ignatius of Loyola. He suggests we should be “more ready to put a good interpretation on another’s statement than to condemn it as false.” It is not easy to apply that directive to today’s politicians. Sometimes the best I can come up with is: he is not saying that because he is evil or has bad intentions. He just doesn’t understand the reality that most people have to live with.
