It is not about biology. It is not about blood. Jesus looks beyond the things that usually divide us to find a more fundamental unity. “Whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, and sister, and mother.” When we look at the social unrest characteristic of our age — Black Live Matter, Me Too Movement, LGBTQ activism — we find at their core that people are not being treated with the worth and dignity that they possess as human beings. Jesus asks us to look beyond those things that ordinarily divide us up into “us vs. them” to discover our common identity as children of God. There is no one out there who is “other” — we belong together as “brother and sister and mother.”
