For the rest of the summer the readings will be taken from the prophets — the three major prophets and three of the minor prophets; Amos, Hosea and Micah. Prophecy means different things in the Bible. The ones we ordinarily recognize as “the prophets” were those who left us something in writing, the canonical prophets. Then, of course, there were those prophets — like Elijah and Elisha — who left nothing in writing but functioned as prophets for Israel. Kings had prophets — think Nathan and King David — as advisers. Great leaders in Israel, like Moses and Samuel, are called prophets. Then there were the guild prophets who were apparently groups that engaged in ecstatic prayer together. All prophets were charged with bring the word of God to others.
