A recent movie, A Perfect Storm, demonstrated the power of nature. The human characters, even with all of the modern technology of powerful boats and advanced communication and weather technology, were no match for the storm. Biblical people would certainly understand that. They knew themselves to be puny (Zoar in the story of Lot) compared with nature. Modern people are somewhat cut off from nature. They imagine they can control the forces of nature with air conditioning and central heating. Pope Francis reminded us in his encyclical, Laudato Si, that humanity is not in charge of nature but part of nature. We have been commanded by God to care for “our common home” so concern for the environment is not political but a spiritual obligation.
