Pope Francis famously said, the Eucharist “is not a prize for the perfect but a powerful medicine and nourishment for the weak.” His statement echoes the gospel scene where Jesus responds to those scandalized at the group of societal misfits he invites to the table, “I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.” These thoughts are relevant to the current debate going on among the US Bishops and the wider Church about who is worthy to receive the Eucharist. Should someone be excluded because of their marital status, their sexual orientation, their political opinion about how we as a country should enact laws protecting children? The Bible suggest a popular Church song gets it exactly right: “All are welcome in this place.”
