The lion roars–who will not be afraid! The prophet Amos says that we should act when we are confronting some danger. But in his time, and in ours, that is not always the case. Global warming is threatening crop production and causing sea water rise which might drown our coastal cities. There have been 302 mass shootings in the US so for in 2024 — almost two a day. They have become so common they almost don’t count as news. Refugees are fleeing desperate poverty and seeking to find a place to raise their families in safety — yet their presence is resisted in prosperous countries. The lion is roaring. The people of Israel found out that ignoring these seeming social thing has religious implications. God is the Lord of history and the earth is our common home. We neglect the plan of God for our world to our peril.
