Mary Magdalene is known as the “apostle to the apostles.” She was the witness to the Risen Jesus who announced to the Eleven the good news of the Resurrection. For this reason, Pope Francis elevated her saint day from a memorial (the usual designation for a saint) to a feast day like the rest of the apostles. The reading assigned to this newly minted feast day is from the Song of Songs. “Have you seen him whom my heart loves?” Mary was chosen to be the witness of the Resurrection because of her great love. Our own faith cannot remain a matter of intellectual assent. Our faith, like the Magadelene’s, must come from the heart. In the end, faith in Jesus is a relationship of love.
