In the years immediately after Vatican Council older priests would come to the seminary for “updating.” They would learn the latest in Biblical scholarship and theological reflection. One priest came out of one session shaking his head and saying the words of Mary Magdalene: “They have taken my Lord, and I don’t know where they laid him.” The story of Mary Magdalene reminds us that some of our long-held notions needed updating. Mary Magdalene had “seven demons” exorcised from her. No matter what has happened in our life change is possible. Mary Magdalene was the “apostle to the apostles.” Does that not say that women can hold leadership in the Church? Mary Magdalene preached. Why is preaching in the Catholic Church limited to men?
