Jeremiah was a sixth century BC prophet who worked in calamitous times for Judah, ending with the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple. His message of repentance fell on deaf ears. His strategy was to call the Jewish people back to their first love. Go, cry out this message for Jerusalem to hear! I remember the devotion of your youth, how you loved me as a bride, following me in the desert. Israel was like a married person who found that the initial passion of the relationship had faded over time. This is natural and to be expected. Jeremiah exhorted the people to recall and reignite that initial passion. Reflecting on how things were in the past will show them the way into the future.
