The children of Israel said, “Would that we had died in Egypt as we sat by our fleshpots and ate our fill of bread!” Of course, when the children of Israel were sitting by those fleshpots they were complaining about their lives as slaves. One thing about human beings, we are never happy. Whatever we have is not enough. The story of the Exodus is an appropriate metaphor for the spiritual life because it reminds us that the ways of God require sacrifice, that we need to get over our “whats-in-it-for-me” thinking. As Jesus illustrated in the parable of the sower (before the explanation) God is not about getting but giving. The sower spreads the seed regardless of whether the recipient is worthy, receptive, capable, prepared. God shares love in the same way, showering it on everyone without distinction. How we respond to that love is on us but God’s job (and ours as disciples) is to spread the love to any and all.
