I was the sort of obnoxious child who asked “why?” Why is the sky blue? Why is the grass green? My father was wise enough not to answer those questions but to take me to the library where I could look up the answers for myself. Since I found the answers for myself instead of having them handed to me the answers had to mean something to me. The disciples asked Jesus, “Why do you speak to the crowd in parables?” The answer is similar to the wisdom of my father. Jesus wants us to uncover the truth for ourselves. Jesus left us no catechism with pre-fab answers to questions of faith. Instead he said the kingdom of God is like as sower sowing, a women making bread, a father forgiving his son, a woman seeking a lost coin. We have to figure out what that means for ourselves. We have to own the answers of faith as our answers. We each have to complete the parables in a way that makes sense to us.
