This summer the scripture lessons have been taken from the Old Testament prophets. We’ve heard from Amos, Hosea, Isaiah and Micah. This week we start to read from Jeremiah. Coincidentally, (providentially?) in the gospel for today Jesus quotes from Isaiah describing how the prophet will be received. “They look but do not see and hear but do not listen or understand.” Jeremiah knew this how difficult the prophet’s vocation could be. He called for the people to repent, to change their ways, to be converted. A competing prophet, Hananiah, told the people everything was beautiful as it was and God would bless them. No one likes to hear the difficult message so they did not heed Jeremiah but listened to the false prophet.
