In the prophet Jeremiah there are three distinct voices. The one we notice first is Jeremiah preaching fire and brimstone to the people. We recognize, O LORD, our wickedness, the guilt of our fathers; that we have sinned against you. The second is the voice of God: “Thus says the Lord…” God lays out to the people how they are to act, what they are to do to avoid the coming catastrophe. The third voice is Jeremiah addressing God. Here he doesn’t make excuses for the people but begs God to be merciful despite their sins. Is it not you alone, O LORD, our God, to whom we look? Jeremiah is like a parent chiding their child while asking the teacher to cut some slack.
