The Chosen People were sincere when they said to Moses: “We will do everything that the LORD has told us.” Of course, the entire rest of the Bible contains stories of how they didn’t live up to that commitment. Their reality is not unique to them but is the human condition writ large. We all are better at having good intentions than we are at keeping them. For example, every morning I think “I”m going to eat healthy today” and every morning the donut calls my name. Jesus noticed that we are a mixed bag of good intentions and bad follow through in the parable of the wheat and the weeds. While the parable seems to be aimed at the community we can apply it to ourselves as individuals. In each of us there lives the wheat of God’s grace. However, there also exists the weeds of resentment and selfishness. We can’t wait until we have completely pure motives but must strive to let the wheat of God’s grace blossom and let God sort out our weeds.
