There is a saying: “Experience is the best teacher.” That is not exactly true. We can have many experiences that don’t teach us a thing. It would be more accurate to say “reflection on experience is the best teacher.” Only when we take a step back and delve into the meaning of an experience and fit it into a larger context of life does it teach us. All of which helps us to understand Jesus’ teaching style. He spoke in parables, typically with the formula, “The Kingdom of God is like …” Jesus does not give us the answer. The parable can only be understood when we reflect upon it, when we take the parable into our hearts to unpack its meaning.
