The intention of the Ten Commandments is to show humanity what it means to be a people of God. The first commandments are a reminder that God is God and you’re not. Since God is God our use of time must be looked at in the light of God. The command to observe the Sabbath is a reminder that we have time as a gift from God and must use it accordingly. Also, the commandments tell us that how we situate ourselves in the world must be judged in light of God. We are told to honor our parents that you may have a long life in the land. All the stuff that characterizes life on earth must be viewed from the divine perspective. The final commandments are all about human relationships. Don’t lie, steal, covet, commit adultery, murder. The way we relate to one another flows out of our relationship with God. The commandments are not then an arbitrary set of rules but an invitation into a closer connection with God in all aspects of human existence.
