The assigned reading two weeks ago was the gospel passage from St. Luke telling the story of Jesus visiting the home of Martha and Mary. Today in what is known as the Sanctoral Cycle the Church remembers St. Martha as well. Whenever things happen like that back to back I always take it as God slapping us on the side of the head: Do you get it yet? What strikes me about the text is the hospitality Jesus wants to receive is simply being with his friends. Martha wants to give him something he doesn’t want or need. In our relationship with Jesus we need to discern what he truly wants from us instead of what we feel comfortable in giving.
