The meeting of Martha and Jesus at the tomb of her brother, Lazarus, was filled with human emotion. Jesus himself wept. When Jesus talked with her about having faith in the resurrection of the dead she basically said, “I know that but that knowledge is not helping me at this moment of loss.” Then Jesus tells her, “I am the resurrection and the life.” In other words, faith in the resurrection is not catechism knowledge but the product of a relationship. God’s love for humanity is as deep as the love we have for our own people and just as we would not lose them, so God does not want to lose any of his beloveds either. Feeling that divine relationship makes grief bearable.
