Today’s feast used to be dedicated only to St. Martha. Pope Francis has added her brother and sister as honorees so it is now the feast of Martha, Mary and Lazarus. This provides the perfect opportunity for us to pray for our own families and particularly for our siblings (if we have any.) When we see some trouble or difficulty that a loved one is going through, the question that Martha poses might be one we have asked ourselves: “Lord, do you not care.” We know that God is good, much better than we could ever hope to be, and yet we would move heaven and earth to make sure that whatever disaster looms would be averted. God’s answer to us is the one he gave to Martha, to trust in “the better portion.” God loves everyone, even our siblings, better than we do. God’s will for all of us might look other than what we would propose but we can be sure that it leads to glory.
