When Jesus spoke in parables his usual pattern is to let us figure it out. How is the kingdom of God like a mustard seed? like leaven? It is fascinating that the prophet Jeremiah performed a parabolic action using as the image his dirty underdrawers! All of which says that the signs of God’s presence are all around us if we have the eyes to see. Since everything comes from God we can learn something about God by looking at the most mundane things in life — even underdrawers. For example, the city is replacing the water mains in from of my house. The water has become contaminated. I can imagine Jesus saying, “The kingdom of God is like a water main, whole and intact….”
