Human nature hasn’t changed. Politicians nowadays when confronted with wrongdoing will say, “Mistakes were made.” Using passive voice makes it sound like the mistakes just kind happened and they can’t be blamed. Aaron tells Moses something similar when he was confronted about the idolatry of the people. He blamed everyone but himself: “So I told them, ‘Let anyone who has gold jewelry take it off.’ They gave it to me, and I threw it into the fire, and this calf came out.” Aaron didn’ tdo it, golden calves were made! As Christians we don’t need to make excuses or shift the blame to others. God knows that we are weak and fallible, that we make mistakes. We can own up to our failings because God will always forgive us and strengthen us for the future. And admitting our sinfulness, our need for mercy, in turn makes us more forgiving and merciful toward others.
