St. Thomas probably thought the other apostles were engaged in wishful thinking. I wish Jesus was here too, but “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nail marks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” Thomas understood that it is not in our wishes that we find God but in reality — and the reality was that Jesus suffered and died. The same is true for our faith. While we have fervent wishes for our selves, our families, our world we will not find God in those wishes. But we will be able to find God in the all-too-often painful realities of life if we have the courage to touch those wounds.
