Our age is known for its unbelief. Whole swatches of society, whole age cohorts no longer affiliate with any faith tradition. The example of St. Thomas provides a path to coming to belief. Thomas was not convinced by argument, persuasion, even personal testimony. Thomas came to faith by touching the wounds of Jesus. Jesus said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.” The way to bring contemporary people to faith is not with evangelism programs, superior catechetics, slick marketing. People will come to faith when we as a Church touch the wounds of Jesus — the wounds of racism, of poverty, of violence, of hatred.
