A memorial in Montgomery, Alabama is dedicated to those who lost their lives fighting for civil rights. Maya Lin, the designer (who also designed the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C.) said that she knew little of the civil rights movement when she was given the commission. During her research she was struck by Dr. King’s invocation of the prophetic voice of Amos 5:24. “Let justice flow like a river and righteousness like a mighty stream.” On the granite wall of the memorial that verse is quoted and a stone table has etched in it the names of those who were killed. You almost don’t notice that the memorial has a thin layer of water flowing over the names — a reminder that justice must permeate all we do.
