Perhaps no other country on earth makes such a claim on its people. We are not a nation because of our geography, our ethnicity or our history. We are a nation because of our ideals: “that all [people] are created equal and that they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights.” If we do not live up to those ideals we fail as a nation. Our founding myth has religious overtones — the people of this land were to be a “city on a hill,” acting as a beacon of hope in the world. While we should celebrate the heritage that we have received we must also repent of those situations where we have fallen short of those lofty goals we set for ourselves.
