On the Fourth of July alternative readings are suggested including those for “peace and justice.” Ronald Reagan famously urged the United States to pursue “peace through strength.” The idea seems to be, if you are the biggest bully on the block no one will mess with you. Pope Paul VI had a different vision. When he spoke to the United Nations he declared “if you want peace, work for justice.” In a more just world where everyone has what they need to take care of their family the need for violence and war diminishes. The question that confronts the United States given the fearsome nature of armament we possess: would we rather be feared or loved? History suggests that being feared might keep other nations from messing with you but non-state actors won’t feel constrained. The Bible suggests reaching out, caring for those in need, working for greater equality, eliminating poverty, preserving the planet seem a more secure path toward peace.
