Today the United States celebrates its independence. While there is much to be proud of when we look at the history of the nation for the past 249 years there are also many things to repent of. When politicians attempt to whitewash that history by ignoring the ugly parts they do no favor to the populace. Only a people that can courageously face its past will be able to make the corrections to ensure a brighter future. What is writ large on a national scale is also true on the personal. While the mantra that you hear often today — “I’m a good person” — is true it can inhibit one’s ability to confront the fact that I haven’t always acted in a good way. Jesus is very explicit that only those who are able to do a fearless moral inventory of themselves, including the bad, will be genuine disciples. “I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.” Yes, we are sinners but because of the power of Christ with us we are able to repent and become who we are meant to be.
