Throughout the summer we will read from the Old Testament prophets. Interestingly we start off this sequence with Amos objecting to being called a prophet. “I was no prophet, nor have I belonged to a company of prophets.” This despite the fact that his call from God was clear. “The LORD said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.'” Amos objects to the traditional role that a prophet would fulfill. The king, or whoever, would determine what he wanted to do and then ask the prophet if it was okay with God. Amos and all authentic prophets understand that we must reverse the process. We must put aside our preferences so we can be free to follow the will of God wherever it leads.
