There was a wonderful Broadway play a few years ago — at my age that means 40 years ago! — entitled Arms Too Short to Box with God. The point of the play — God will win in the end. But from the very beginning people box with, wrestle with, God. Take the patriarch Jacob. Jacob was left there alone. Then some man wrestled with him until the break of dawn. We wrestle with God because we have our ideas about how things should go and when our plans go awry we struggle to align ourselves with God’s will. The wrestling is not a bad thing but, like Jacob becoming Israel, we are changed as a result of the divine encounter as we limp into God’s future for us.
