“When Israel was a child I loved him, out of Egypt I called my son. The more I called them, the farther they went from me.” The relentless care of God for Israel is a constant theme in the prophets. When I was in Jersey City a group of mothers formed who called themselves: “These are our children.” They realized that the neighborhood crime and violence was not due to outsiders but to members of their own families. Together they were able to go to the drug dealers on the streets and challenge them as mothers who loved them and wanted what was best for them. Like God, they didn’t give up but counted on the force of their love to cause a conversion.
