Israel had the misfortune of lying between the two superpowers of the time — Egypt and Assyria. With so much of the region being desert, the only invasion route with adequate water and resources went through Israel. The kings of Israel tried to play one off against the other in a game of realpolitik. The prophets like Hosea warned them against that strategy. Assyria will not save us, nor shall we have horses to mount. They called Israel back to a more faithful following of the ways of God. Straight are the paths of the LORD, in them the just walk. In our time we should not get caught up in the various political factions but instead focus on the demands of the gospel.
