Jacob found that he couldn’t manipulate things to go his own way. After he conned the birthright away from his brother he fled for his life. When he schemed to get Rachel for his wife his father-in-law-to-be out conned him. After he finally got his heart’s desire he found himself with four women who were mothers to his children and who didn’t get along. Then after fleeing his situation he had to face that his brother was coming for him with who knows what intent. It was at that moment that Jacob had to wrestle with God’s will for him. Jacob was left there alone. Then some man wrestled with him until the break of dawn. Trying to manipulate things to his own advantage hadn’t worked. He had to wrestle with God’s will for him wherever it would lead. Jacob’s story belongs to all of us. We eventually must face the “hound of heaven” and bring our wills into conformity with the will of God for us.
