Among the many bizarre aspects of political life in the United States these days is a phenomenon called Christian Nationalism. As near as I can tell Christian Nationalism is the exact opposite of what Jesus was about. Jesus was part of a national movement in the Jewish state. He named the twelve apostles to demonstrate that he was doing something new. He was not adapting his movement to the nation but creating a new way of thinking and acting. “Jesus sent out these Twelve … As you go, make this proclamation: ‘The Kingdom of heaven is at hand.'” If we are to be faithful followers of Jesus we must adopt his values and live according to his virtues: recognizing his presence in the poor, the hungry, the homeless, the sick; working to overcome differences to create one beloved community; seeing every person as of infinite worth as a child of God; being willing to forgive those who hurt us; loving our enemies.
