On Mount Horeb Elijah does not find God in the hurricane, in the earthquake, in the volcano. No, God is present in the “tiny whispering sound.” This is a cautionary tale for all believers. When the hurricane of a health emergency occurs, when the earthquake of a family crisis threatens, when the volcano of a financial disaster erupts it can be difficult to find the presence of God. That is why it is so important to go into the silence, to find that quiet place where you can be attentive to the voice of God. Only in silence can we address the question God poses to Elijah and to us: “Why are you here?”
