Jesus tells us his plan of action: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.” When you look at Sermon on the Mount as a whole you can see what the law fulfilled would look like. Instead of thinking in terms of minimums — what’s the least I have to do to stay right with God — Jesus wants us to shift to thinking of maximums — what more can I do to bring God’s love, justice, peace into the world. One of the minimum thoughts from my youth — how much of the Mass can I miss and it will still count? Maximum thinking today — who can I bring good news to today.
