The epistle of First Peter reads like a long reflection on the significance of baptism in the life of a Christian. It might have it origins in an instruction given to catechumens. If so, the saying “love covers a multitude of sins” must have been a consolation to the neophytes. St. Peter reminded them (and us) that God does not call angels but fallible human beings who have in the past, and will in the future, mess up. But God can work with our messiness if we are willing to take the focus off of ourselves and put it on the other. When we love, which certainly includes forgiving, the other we show the power of God at work even in the likes of us.
